In The Bloom of Summer

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it,
it's your world for the moment.

Most people in the city rush around so,
they have no time to look at a flower.

I want them to see it whether they want to or not. ” ~ Georgia O'Keeffe

We are celebrating the first day of summer. And what could express the season more eloquently than flowers in a garden. So in search for suitable candidates I went.  You can imagine how thrilled I was, then, to find these wonderful beauties I photographed on our holiday last summer.

Suddenly I found myself longing to be able to paint them. And I could see them done on huge canvases, in the bold and brilliant style of well known artist Georgia O'Keeffe who once said she decided that if she could paint a flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.

Although I have tried my hand at painting a few times long ago -- my first earnest attempt was a tiny posy of pansies -- I wonder if I'd have the courage to attempt something quite so bold.

If you were going to paint one of these, which would you choose? The rose at the top, or one of the two poppy poses?  I think I'd choose the first poppy pose... or maybe the second one.

On that note, I'm wishing you a happy and beautiful summer day!

Now where are my paints......

  1. I would never even try to paint a flower! Not one of my gifts, for sure! Your pictures are lovely and I agree, flowers are one of the nicest things about summer! :-)

  2. You do the poppies, I`ll do the rose. Great photos. Sometimes I long to paint, too.

  6. They are all beautiful....and would be a challenge to paint. I'm toying with the third poppy one. I love summer with it's colorful flowers.

  7. Oh my mind doesn't even bend that way. Glad that you are, though. I do hope that you'll give it a try and share. Of course, share.

  8. I couldn't paint either, I am hopeless! It is always interesting getting up close to the flowers, as they are often much more complicated than they first appear.

  9. I would choose that first flower, but how could I, how cold anyone top the lushness of that lovely genuine article that God created? It is truly stunning.

  10. The poppys with that lush green background. I've traded my paintbrush for a camera lens until such time as I retire and have time to really learn to paint. There are so many ways to express God's beautiful creation and your photos are proof of that.

  11. Ever since discovering Georgia O'Keefe's art I've been an admirer. I love what she set out to do... and it's true that unless you take the time, you don't really "see" a flower, or anything, for that matter. As for me, I enjoy painting roses... I really love the first of the poppies though. Seems like you captured the heart of these flowers :)
