Out Pops Spring in the Garden

"It is spring again. The earth is like a
child that knows poems by heart."

Spring feels slow this year. It's not that long ago since snow fell... again. And some night temperatures still drop below freezing. Yet the earliest spring bulbs push through the warming brown earth and offer us a palette of Crocus, Squill, Grape hyacinth, and other lovelies. It's a godsend for colour starved eyes. The tulips will be next—green leafy clumps are already forming and every day they grow taller.

Here's a peek at what's making news in our corner of the world this week.

"The smallest of things can make you feel like
something is special about today."
SUSAN BRANCH, from her blog

"That is one good thing about this world...there
are always sure to be more springs."
L.M. MONTGOMERY, Anne of Avonlea

"Spring work is going on
with joyful enthusiasm."
JOHN MUIR, The Wilderness World of John Muir

“Can words describe the fragrance
of the very breath of spring?"

"If people did not love one another, I really don't
see what use there would be in having any spring."
VICTOR HUGO, Les Misérables

"Spring drew on...and a greenness grew over those
brown beds, which, freshening daily, suggested
the thought that Hope traversed them at night,
and left each morning brighter traces of her steps."

"He smelled cold water and cold intrepid green.
Those early flowers smelled like cold water. Their fragrance
was not the still perfume of high summer;
it was the smell of cold, raw green."

"It was such a spring day as breathes into a (wo)man
an ineffable yearning, a painful sweetness,
a longing that makes (her) stand motionless,
looking at the leaves or grass, and fling out (her)
arms to embrace (s)he knows not what."

Wishing you a beautiful weekend,

  1. It's so wonderful to see those first spring flowers. I love the Paul Harding quote "Those early spring flowers smelled like cold water."

  2. Thank you for the lovely photos and the equally lovely quotes. Florence

  3. Spring has truly come to your garden! We have nothing out here yet, and I'm in that stage of wondering if spring will ever come. But your post has given me Hope!

    1. So many of our shrubs and perennials still look 'dead'. I do hope warmer weather, and some rain, will soon indicate otherwise. Thanks, Joy, hope Spring comes your way soon, soon.

  4. Oh, the beauty of these early spring darlings! As your Charlotte Bronte quote expresses so well, they really are the embodiment of Hope! And your photos are a feast for the eyes and balm for the soul.🥰

    1. I was glad to find that Charlotte Bronte quote - I agree, it expresses the season so well. Thanks, Kathy.

  5. Yes! “Feast for the eyes, balm for the soul!!! What a JaoY this season is as all of these beautiful reminders of “Spring, renewal, beauty pop up from the earth !!! On my daily walks I often go by some neighborhood Lilac Bushes and I stop to take in the lovely scent of Lilacs. I even rang the doorbell of a neighbor to ask if they would be willing to share a lilac bough with me. They generously said “Take what you want.”☺️ I took two blooms .
Yesterday as I was sitting in my back yard I was able to catch a waft of Lily of the Valley scent coming from a garden in my yard. I must go out today and clip some to put in different rooms of the house .
Yes, the gifts of color, the beauty of different flowers, their scents….. Spring IS a gift!!!!
Thank you Brenda for the beautiful quotes and photos!!!!
You’ve brought that beauty to us all!!!!! ~ Couldn’t be more thankful !!! ~ Ann from Ohio 💗

  6. Oh, you’re so much farther ahead than we are! It’s so fun to peer at the ground and look for green. There’s more and more every day!

  7. I'm impressed that your flowers are blooming ahead of ours! Love the pretty purple flowers!

  8. Oh lovely spring flowers on your blog today, Brenda. It IS wonderful to see the flowers as our eyes, after long winter days and nights, truly are color starved. Very nice post. Hope the rest of your week is super, too. Susan
