Year Four in My Five-Year Quotebook

"I enjoy collecting quotations. When I find
a choice one I pounce on it like a lepidopterist.
My day is made. When I lose one because I did
not copy it out at once I feel bereft."
R.I. FITZHENRY, The David & Charles Book of Quotations

In January 2022, Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like An Artist fame, wrote about a five-year-diary he started using as a commonplace notebook for quotes. His aim was to write down a quote a day. Liking his idea and the notebook he used, I promptly ordered a copy—in red, his was blue—and, thus, I began to curate my own five-year collection.

Here it is January 2025, at the start of my fourth year, and I'm still enjoying this little exercise. I don't especially go looking for quotes but rather they come to me—whether it's through a book I'm reading or whilst (I love this English word) browsing on social media, or whether it's from a snippet of conversation overheard in a café or on the radio.

When I ordered the diary in 2022, at first I thought I'd made a mistake. I was more than a little dismayed to find it so very tiny in size—I forgot to check the dimensions before buying (about 6.5 x 3.5 inches). Still it was such a pleasing little book. I liked the feel of it in my hand. Beautifully bound with a cloth hard cover, boasting a satin ribbon to mark the spot, the diary is elegant and compact. Reminiscent of those childhood diaries so many of us wanted and rarely filled, minus the little key and lock, this diary came in three colours: blue, black, and red (I picked the red - it's more pink than red). Alas, from my quick scan on Amazon, they are currently unavailable.

"Those blank lines serve as a gentle encouragement
to live all the days of my life with intention."
SARAH K. BUTTERFIELD, from an article read on Medium.com

I did wonder at first how Austin Kleon could stick to just one quote a day from the dozens of possibilities that tromp across our path. Perhaps that's why he chose a tiny diary rather than a sprawling notebook. I began to see how it can help a person to focus in and narrow down, to listen for that one 'just what I need' line that breaks through the chatter. You write that one down. That line that expands the mind, thrills the spine, makes you burst out loud laughing, or causes you to breathe in and calm yourself, resting a minute before moving on.

This pint-size diary with a mere six short lines per entry has turned out to be the perfect proportion.

At the end of five years, I will have collected 1,826 quotes (includes one Leap Year). Already it's fun to browse through. Lots of favourites, a worthy collection, I'd say. To Austin Kleon, 'I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks' for recommending this wonderful and almost cheeky pint-size acquisition. It sits by my bedside with a designated coloured pen—a different colour each year—a little habit that brings pleasure each day.

"I love (quotations) because it is a joy to find thoughts
one might have, beautifully expressed with much
authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself."
MARLENE DIETRICH

In this little celebratory post of my growing collection of quotations and their authors, I have scanned my January selections from the last three years, hand picking a few for those of you who also adore a good quote. I hope you enjoy.

  2. Good Morning Brenda!☺️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️ It is ALWAYS such fun to know we have “others” in our circle of friends who love some of the “same things!” I have always loved quotes!! Many of the quotes I appreciate are strewn through my journals of the past 5 years. I have thought of having a separate place or journal for them. I know 1 other person who has a plethora of quotes ( Anne-Marie Bennett ~ “Kaleidosoul.” She generously shared pages of them with some of her followers.
~ and different colored pens….I am chuckling because just yesterday, after purchasing a new , very pretty planner I picked up 3 new markers ; one for January, 1 for February and 1 for March!
Brenda, I love your every bit of spirit!!!!!
Wish I could leave you all with a quote! ( I’ve misplaced my daily journal which usually sits by me here in the couch this morning!!!
( Recently read “Ride of Her Life “ by Elizabeth Letts. I know there were quite a few in there!! That is quite a story by the way!!!
Thanks for starting my morning out with simple JOY!☺️🤗🫖

Thanks for sharing the title "Ride of Her Life" by Elizabeth Letts. Sounds like a book to track down. Wishing you a beautiful week ahead, Ann. Thanks for your lovely note.

  3. Oh I love your little journal and it's perfect for quotes. I still keep an organizer that is ring bound. I write quotes and when it gets a little fun, I move pages over into a binder. I love quotes and you've shared some wonderful ones today! Hugs, Diane

  5. Awesome idea to have a separate book for quotes, I might have to start one. I just love that first quote with the part...."I pounce on it like a lepidopterist". But you also have some other ones that gave me a chuckle.

    1. Betty, when I saw that line, I was immediately taken to a girlhood memory when my sister and I watched a Jerry Lewis movie. In it, he portrayed himself as a lepidopterist to a young woman he was courting at the time (I loved the word then). I think the movie was titled "Three on a Couch"; he was dating more than one girl at a time which created all sorts of problems and the usual hilarity and humour that Jerry Lewis was good at.

  6. Brenda, I think i remember when you began this book of quotes (did you not write about it here on your blog?), and i am stunned to hear that you are in your fourth year! How time flies! Four years of quotes that spoke to you must be a great treasure!

I love this one: "Because even with the dark parts and the light parts and the good parts and the bad parts, dinner must still be served." I also like the one about planting flowers! "Paige Turner" brought a chuckle!

    1. Cheryl, yes, I did write about this notebook of quotes when I first started it. I agree, it's hard to believe it's year four already. Glad to hear you enjoyed those particular quotes. Thanks for stopping by! xo

  7. I remember when you started this book, and I too can hardly believe four years have passed since then. But how it must take you back to the moment you were touched by that quote. Does it?

I have kept a quote book for years - now on my second one. I love going back and reading them, being hit by the profoundness again. There is an Indian proverb quoted on the cover of my current quote book: "All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today." A perfect January quote as we look forward to a New Year.

    1. So many quotes I wrote out over the years continue to resonate, even all these years later. They meant something then; they mean something still. I love that Indian proverb you shared.

Like you, I started collecting quotes in notebooks years ago - I grew weary of keeping track of those little scraps of paper where I'd jotted lines down and tucked in all sorts of corners. It seemed a good idea to finally gather them into a notebook. Now I have several, including this new 5-year version. I really like this style for short quotes - at a glance I can see (or will see) five on a page.

      Thanks, Joy, for your note.

  8. Life has gotten in the way over the last year and I so rarely get to read your posts, but oh goodness, the ones I read are so timely for me.

I'm reminded of Father Tim from the Mitford series (by Jan Karon) who kept quote books. I started one shortly after reading about his : )
I've never thought of trying to record one daily.
My quotes I've written down lately are way more serious, but they fit the season of life I'm in.
"What God wills, will be done - but don't forget the human responsibility."
"Are you trusting God to be in control? Can you trust His plan?"

I'm not sure they fit the requirement - not that there is a requirement, I suppose, but they take me firmly in hand and make me answer the questions AND remember the truths:
God's will WILL be accomplished. I cannot forget I do have a responsibility. He can be trusted.

God bless you and keep you,
    Carolyn

    1. Lovely to hear from you, Carolyn. I have the great pleasure of owning those Father Timothy quote books, They are little treasure troves, aren't they? Thank you so much for your blessing to me - I receive it gratefully. And I wish it back to you... His grace is ours in the days ahead whatever they may bring.

  9. Four years? Wow! I remember when you first posted about this quote book. I thought it such a good idea, but I never followed up on it. Like others here, I've collected quotes for years. I'd like to organize them all one day - they are scattered throughout my journals and in notebooks.
I enjoyed this selection of your quotes from January.

    1. How the time does fly! It hardly seems possible to have collected three years' worth of quotes already. I've got my other notebooks which I filled over the years, plus tons of quotes inside my journals - scattered everywhere like leaves on an autumn day. Like you, I'd like to organize them one day but who knows if that will ever happen. It's fun collecting, and they don't take up much room, in comparison, say, to cabinets filled with China dolls and dishes. :) Thanks, Lorrie, for your note.
