Five on Friday: Cozy Up Dark Corners

" In the right light, at the right time,
everything is extraordinary. "
AARON ROSE

We have had a taste of winter here this week. Not only have we had the killing frosts that render any plant into compost fodder, but we have had snow. Although nothing to speak of, it did not melt away as it sometimes does this early in the season. So while some folks are still happily chasing autumn colours, we're staring through leafless branches into sullen skies of grey and powdery rooftops.

I don't mind at all. It means that we can turn on cozy lamps that peek through windows, scatter twinkle lights, and light some cheery candles to brighten shadowy corners. As we in the Northern Hemisphere begin the ritual of switching on our lights earlier and earlier, I hope you will enjoy this wee collection of candle and light sayings. I especially got a giggle from the one directly below....

" I wanted to buy a candle holder, but the store
didn't have one. So I got a cake. "
MITCH HEDBERG

" People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when
the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed
only if there is light from within. "
ELISABETH KÜBLER-ROSS

" There’s a sorrow and pain in everyone’s life,
but every now and then there’s a ray of light that melts
the loneliness in your heart and brings comfort
like hot soup and a soft bed. "
HUBERT SELBY JR.

" Know that when you live joyfully,
you radiate your light into the world. "
JONATHAN LOCKWOOD HUIE

" As we let our light shine, we unconsciously give
other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated
from our own fear, our presence actually liberates others. "
MARIANNE WILLIAMSON

  2. The first quote made me giggle a little, too. Any excuse for cake! No snow here, but it's cold and drizzly. Cozy-making is going on here, too.

  4. you radiate warmth with this post! My first impulse was 'aw, you poor thing, when I heard the snow stayed but by the end you drew us into the warmth of contentment's glow! Made me thing of this Dicken's quote: Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress.

  6. Wonderful warm words to light my gray and cold weekend. We do not have snow but our ground is soaked with wet leaves that have given up their place above. Candles are the perfect antidote for this time of the year. Take care and stay warm friend. Hugs!

  7. I've been burning my woodfire scented candle every day. Your quotes and photos made me feel warm and cozy all over. Yes, I giggled at the first quote too. And I loved Janet Martin's Dickens quote too.

  8. Oh it is much too early for winter, though you are taking it in the best possible way. May better weather...warmer days and sunshine return before the inevitable.

  10. Beautiful images and thoughts. In our area of the world we have long winters, so we may as well embrace them and see the beauty.

  11. Giggling, cake is always good! I love candles and twinkle lights so much. Even kept up the ones around the kitchen windows after last Christmas and am so glad we did. We've only had one frost so far and saved almost everything, covering things up knowing it was worth the work for one night and then a return to warmer weather. But I have been so envious of the snow pictures I've seen. I like all your pictures on this post but especially that first one. There's something about it that brings hope of a future day when I might feel safe to sit in a cafe or local family restaurant and enjoy the company even more than the food. Ah, if only.

  12. Lovely, light-filled post! Love the words substituting a cake for a candle holder!:-) I, too, love the coziness of the season. We are still some time away from snow, I believe.

  14. I'm leaning into the cozy season! It won't surprise you that the majority of my candles are tea-scented. I'm currently burning one, Hidden Gems' Lavender Peach, that has a jewellery at the bottom!

  15. It seems as if I am always behind in my blog reading/chatting . . . but here I am again and I so enjoyed seeing the warm glow of candlelight here this morning. It is not cold here yet, but we've had several cloudy, rainy days in a row and candlelight is just right. Hope your week has been cozy and warmly glowing so far!

  16. I love pretty candles and have several of the candles that come on with a timer! They really make a room look cozy in the evenings! Of course the scents of real candles are the best! Happy Fall!
