The Nourishing Nectar of Books

"I go to books as a bee goes to the flower ~
for a nectar that I can make into my own honey."
~ John Burroughs

Of late I've been gleaning nectar from Sarah Young's book, Jesus Calling If it had not been for this little book filled with comforting and nurturing words, spoken as if Jesus was telling me himself, I don't know what I would have done these last few months, getting up every morning at three to go off to work with hubby.

Yet, every time I opened the book, I'd hear His whisper of encouragement that, yes, I was able to do all things through His strength... with joy and peace even. Here are a few lines that are especially dear to me at present:
"I have promised to meet all your needs according to My glorious riches. Your deepest, most constant need is for My Peace." p. 97

"I am calling you to a life of constant communion with Me. Basic training includes learning to live above your circumstances..." p. 96

"Because I am your constant Companion, there should be a lightness to your step that is observable to others. Do not be weighed down with problems and unresolved issues, for I am your burden-bearer." p. 4

I'm wondering if there's a book from which you've been gathering 'nourishing nectar' these days? We'd love it if you shared a title or a quote or two.

Wishing you heaven glimpses between book covers,
Brenda

  1. Brenda, I really MUST get me a copy of this book. I keep "running into it" - and the quotes you shared here are SO reassuring and instruction...

Hope your Thanksgiving Holiday/Weekend is a blessed one -- quiet or full, according to your circumstances and His arrangement.

  2. Brenda - Love your book and nectar quote - love JESUS CALLING - love this post. Such a lift to my spirit as I'm even now wrestling with so many questions. Need to hunker down with some Word in His lap, me thinks . . .

    Joy!

  5. Hello Brenda....
Oh, don't you just LOVE books? I've been reading another one of Norman Vincent Peale. It's not the "Power of Positive Thinking" but "What Postive Thinking Can Do for You," (or something like that.)

It's extremely encouraging and lifts up my soul every time I read a page or two out of it.

Also reading a true story of wealth, alcoholism, violence, etc. in Silent Screams from the Hamptons. Very well written.

Take care and Happy Thanksgiving! Susan

  6. I am on my second time through this little devotional, Brenda, and still each day I find that the message seems written just for me at that very moment.

Another wonderful book I found - in an antique store - is a prayer book entitled, "God's Minute - A Book of 365 Daily Prayers Sixty Seconds Long for Home Worship." The prayers were written by religious leaders of the early 1900's and they are beautiful!

  7. What a delightful quote from John Burroughs. Books are like that for me too -- they are as nourishing nectar. And Sarah Young's book is truly a gift from heaven.
