Create Your Own Way

"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, taking risks,
breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun."
~ Mary Lou Cook

Joy often comes when we become so absorbed in creating something new that we forget about everything else. Children know how to do that well. In fact, I'm reminded of something author Brenda Ueland once said about the process of writing. The creative act of writing should not be like a mountain top experience, but rather like a child stringing beads in kindergarten -- happy, absorbed and quietly putting one bead on after another.

Is there anything in this list that captivates your imagination to do something new today? And become as happily absorbed in it as a child?

~ paint ~ putter ~ puzzle ~
~ glue ~ sprinkle ~ bead ~
~ waltz ~ strum ~ skate ~

~ sing ~ color ~ wrap ~
~ stitch ~ compose ~ play ~
~ eat ~ sip ~ bake ~

~ ponder ~ draw ~ design ~
~ craft ~ sculpt ~ write ~
~ decorate ~ read ~ dream ~

Today, I'm happily puttering, baking fruitcake,
and sipping hot apple cider! And you?

  1. We've been thinking of "puzzle" but there's no room. We'll wait on that one until January. A puzzle table is usually set up for the winter. Thanks for a great list!

  2. Yes, being creative is supposed to be about the journey, not the destination. Some things I'm better at remembering that advice than others, which is why I take lots of photos, write a little, and draw hardly at all.

  3. love your quote. I teach in my wordshop class that the right brain is our creative child while the left brain is our careful critic. We have to let the creative child out first...

  4. Hi Brenda, In the act of creativity we lose all sense of time, become less absorbed in our problems, and then have something beaufiful (or yummy!) to show for it. To your list of creative inspirations, I must add GLITTER : )

  5. Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes - but sometimes other things take time - like today. But I'll be back being creative when I can.

  7. Ahhhh...to putter. Love that word.
    It's an onomatopoeia.

  8. Once more a lovely post. Stringing beads together is often how I feel when I write (wish I can revise that sentence!), on some of the more inspired pieces at least. Sometimes I start typing and is taken on a ride I hadn't intended, which is fun but not always with great results.
