The Beauty of Grey

I would never have thought that I'd include grey in a list of favourite colours. I mean, grey? Of all colours, it's so, well, grey.

But then, not that long ago, I began to see the colour in a whole new light. And yes, I like days with overcast, grey skies... and I feel cozy when grey fog wraps itself over some early mornings. There is something calming...almost protective...about them.

I'm beginning to see that our world would be a lot 'greyer' if we didn't have this particular colour in the palette to add depth, richness, and yes, beauty, to the mosaic of our life's events. You see, you need some dark, some shadow, to show off light.

Grey may be one of those colours that on its own isn't so exciting, but perhaps it's like the added pinch of a secret ingredient that turns an okay dish into something marvelous... in a paint box kind of way.

Do you notice how, in the photo below, the overall grayish tones of the whole tapestry offsets the brighter colours? They pop out right out... and suddenly the whole painting comes alive.  Don't you just love the contrast?

Guess that turns out to be a very unexpected glimpse of heaven!

Beautiful in its own way ~
I give you the colour GREY.

(And if you live in America, then will be spelled GRAY)

Hugs and blisses,
Brenda

  1. Hi Brenda. Well, gray hasn't ever really been one of my favorite colors but it is calming. Gray days are good for sitting by the fire and eating soup, too! Take care. Susan

  3. Gray has become one of my favourite colours to decorate with. My kitchen is painted grey, as is my china cabinet. It's calming and a beautiful neutral for combining with almost any other colour. The tapestry above is a wonderful example of that.
Soft grey fog like in the first photo is lovely, but I do confess to tiring of incessant grey clouds overhead.

  4. I wear quite a lot of grey. It's a colour that can be accessorized with so many others, can look different every time.
The grey weather here is something that needs accessorizing!

  5. Great thoughts on gray! (I'm an American.) :D

I would love to show off my new header to you, Brenda. I took the picture while on a snowy hike a few weeks ago. The whole time I felt like I was in Narnia.

  6. Hi Brenda, I loved your post today. I feel the same way about gray days. (You can tell I'm from America! I like the "grey" spelling much better.) :) I especially love looking at storm clouds and the way they roll across the sky, tumbling and swirling, a million shades of gray. Thanks for the Irish tea break recipe,it looks great. I am going to give it a try. Have a lovely day! Delisa :)

  8. I know what you mean. I always thought gray was rather blah until the last couple of years, when I began to really fall in love with it. It's a beautiful complementary color. Wonderful post.

  9. I look awful in gray, but I do love the color when it is a contrast like your picture. I love fog and the mystery of it.

I took some black and white photos of creative scenes from nature and the area where I live. It was the gray colors in each that grabbed my attention and made the picture "arty."
